Animal Assisted Psychotherapy Program

The ABC'S of personal growth
through Equine and Pet Assisted

ANIMALS BRING CHANGE provides Equine and Animal Assisted Psychotherapy to children and adults. It enhances overall well being and helps people achieve personal, emotional and physical growth through interactions with animals. Animals sense our innermost feelings and give immediate feedback by their reactions to our behavior. The program is located in the Boca Raton/Delray Beach area of South Florida.

ABC offers an innovative, experiential treatment approach that provides exciting, fun, effective interventions to support individuals, couples and families experiencing emotional struggles and stressful issues. It is also popular in the treatment of addiction, eating disorders and people who are suffering with PTSD. It helps improve corporate morale and teamwork, and benefits individuals with special needs.

Interaction between the animals and clients, facilitated and guided by a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, offers a non-judgmental format that helps clients identify problematic thoughts and patterns of behavior while modifying self-concepts, increasing personal awareness and emotional growth, and improving communication skills. These personal changes lead to increasing self-esteem and improving interpersonal relationships. Each session is unique and is based upon the person's specific goals.

The horses, dogs, cats, and other pets utilized in this unique and productive therapy are particularly responsive animals with distinct personalities and an acute awareness and sensitivity to their surroundings and to humans. They are friendly and interact in a warm and caring manner.

Therapy sessions include a structured activity with the animal(s), followed by an opportunity to process and discuss the results. This is a hands on approach encouraging personal experiences with the animals and usually does not include mounted riding of the horses. However, we tailor our programs to the specific needs of the clients, so we do offer horseback riding to certain clients with autism, physical issues and learning disabilities.

The equine activities take place at an equestrian facility in Delray Beach, Florida. The pet activities are mobile and can take place at the equine facility or at a business location.

The founder of the program is Carol Tannen, MSW, LCSW. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the State of Florida with over 4 decades of experience. She has worked with clients of all ages, in both in-patient and out-patient settings, who have experienced a variety of emotional, psychological and physically challenging struggles. She is also a Veterinary Assistant, has been a horse owner for over 28 years and has always enjoyed sharing her home with numerous pets.
